چکیده

The HARA radiation code is fully-coupled to the FUN3D unstructured-grid CFD code for the purpose of simulating high-energy hypersonic ows. The radiation energy source terms and surface heat transfer, under the tangent slab approximation, are included within the uid dynamic ow solver. The Fire II ight test, at the Mach-31 1643-second trajectory point, is used as a demonstration case. Comparisons are made with an existing structured-grid capability, the LAURA/HARA coupling. The radiative surface heat transfer rates from the present approach match the benchmark values within 6%. Although radiation coupling is the focus of the present work, convective surface heat transfer rates are also reported, and are seen to vary depending upon the choice of mesh connectivity and FUN3D ux reconstruction algorithm. On a tetrahedral-element mesh the convective heating matches the benchmark at the stagnation point, but under-predicts by 15% on the Fire II shoulder. Conversely, on a mixed-element mesh the convective heating over-predicts at the stagnation point by 20%, but matches the benchmark away from the stagnation region.

Understanding the Parallel Scalability of An Implicit Unstructured Mesh CFD Code

In this paper, we identify the scalability bottlenecks of an unstructured grid CFD code (PETSc-FUN3D) by studying the impact of several algorithmic and architectural parameters and by examining different programming models. We discuss the basic performance characteristics of this PDE code with the help of simple performance models developed in our earlier work, presenting primarily experimental...

Development of Unsteady Aerodynamic and Aeroelastic Reduced-order Models Using the Fun3d Code

Recent significant improvements to the development of CFD-based unsteady aerodynamic reduced-order models (ROMs) are implemented into the FUN3D unstructured flow solver. These improvements include the simultaneous excitation of the structural modes of the CFD-based unsteady aerodynamic system via a single CFD solution, minimization of the error between the full CFD and the ROM unsteady aerodyna...

Code-to-Code Comparison of CFD/CSD Simulation for a Helicopter Rotor in Forward Flight

Two unsteady Reynolds-averaged Navier-Stokes solvers are used to compute the rotor airloads on the UH-60A rotorcraft at several flight conditions across the flight envelope. One code, OVERFLOW, solves the flow equations using either structured grids, or a combination of structured and Cartesian grids. The other solver, FUN3D, uses unstructured grids. Both flow solvers are coupled to the same ro...

Simulation of Store Separation using Low-cost CFD with Dynamic Meshing

The simulation of the store separation using the automatic coupling of dynamic equations with flow aerodynamics is addressed. The precision and cost (calculation time) were considered as comparators. The method used in the present research decreased the calculation cost while limiting the solution error within a specific and tolerable interval. The methods applied to model the aerodynamic force...

Development of Fast Unstructured Cfd Code “fastar”

In order to develop a fast CFD code, we investigated well-known unstructured CFD codes, and we have determined the target performance and specification of CFD code. This is then followed by the development of a fast unstructured CFD code “FaSTAR”. The accuracy of drag prediction with FaSTAR is validated by the DPW4 benchmark problem. The computed drag coefficients generally agree with other res...
